I think bridges can be built from one side, otherwise we would have been constrained by rivers until we mastered flight. What you cant do is force someone to use the bridge.

or otherwise I offer the words of Dorothy parker

My land is bare of chattering folk;
the clouds are low along the ridges,
and sweet's the air with curly smoke
from all my burning bridges.

They certainly can be rebuilt... Where there's a will, and all that.

And that is the key really; there must be a will, otherwise no bridges will ever be built. And just as there are two sides to a chasm, so there are two sides from which a bridge must be built. Nobody can build a bridge all by themselves, they need the support of a partner also building from the other side.

And therein lies the conundrum; having burnt a bridge, how would one go about saying "Oops... Sorry. Never meant to burn down that bridge..." Burning a bridge does send a rather clear and forceful message. Which means "Oops, sorry..." can never be sufficient to convince the partner on the other side to help rebuild.

Which leaves one of two choices: find a way to convince the other side to assist, or regret...

The great things about bridges is they can be rebuilt. I suppose building bridges is tough work but it can be done. At least with the bridge down we are forced to look at things from a distance, decide if we need a bridge and if so what type of bridge we need to build.

Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Aye, you're right. And thank you for the timeous reminder...

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.

Since Telkom is currently the only provider of Fixed Line Broadband in South Africa, I have no option but to use them. If only for the physical infrastructure.

I use WebAfrica as my ISP: the fact that I can pre-pay for my broadband at the same rate as I would have paid normally, and the fact that their prices a very reasonable for both Shaped and Unshaped ADSL Accounts made them an easy decision.

We don't have too much space to manoeuvre in the South African Telkoms arena, but we do have some choices...

"We contacted the customer and we apologised and corrected the error, but he wanted to take the complaint further to the ombudsman."

Don't you just love the bank's response, makes it sound like the customer is totally over-reacting, like this was a one time incident. What about all the other people who paid R1.99 for a so-called toll-free call?

Bastards.

And don't even get me started on the SABC, well, you already know that story. Perhaps I should contact Mr Pashut's lawyer.

Don’t you just love the bank’s response, makes it sound like the customer is totally over-reacting, like this was a one time incident. What about all the other people who paid R1.99 for a so-called toll-free call?

Bastards.

And don’t even get me started on the SABC, well, you already know that story. Perhaps I should contact Mr Pashut’s lawyer.

On the 21 September 2005 Irina Cornici's body were exhumed for further investigation. It was found that she died due to "dehydration, exhaustion and lack of oxygen".

Quite an unpleasant death, all told.

According to this article on BBC:

The Orthodox Church condemned the incident as "abominable", banned Father Daniel from the priesthood and excluded the four nuns from the church.

It sure took them long enough to decide that exorcism that lead to death and thus news exposure is a no-no...

Help yourself...

I thought it a beautiful piece of nose-thumbing at the current state of excessive politic correctness.

That having been said, merry Christmas form a hot and sunny Capetown.

I loved the comment from the Minister about how they acknowledge their short comings but that they have improved. What she doesn't seem to understand is that a bit of friendliness and courtesy from the Home Affairs staffers would go a long,long way in making things more pleasant for the citizens they are here to serve.

Whereas I think therefore I am. I think.

I mean, I know that I am, and I think that I think, but I'm not absolutely certain that I am merely because I think; since I'm not too certain of the interrelationship between the two factoids.

'sides which, this has just started getting very boring, so I'll leave it at that.
